Your business type, the type of building and space, as well as your specific needs will determine the type of overhead door that you select for your place of business. Some of the key factors to consider in selecting a commercial overhead door are:

How often is your overhead door used? If it is heavily used you need to consider high cycle springs, bigger tracks, heavy cable, or heavier gauge steel.

Is your building insulated? If it is, consider an insulated overhead door. Sectional doors are available in varying degrees of thickness with polystyrene insulation sandwiched between heavy gauge metal and skin. The energy savings should be significant if your building requires this type.

How wide does your door need to be? Sectional doors are more economical for openings under 16 feet while rolling steel overhead doors will provide longer life and function better for openings over 16 feet.

Determine each door's opening width and height requirements.

• Measure the available headroom, which is the distance from the header to the ceiling. Make not of any obstruction above the header.
• Measure the backroom which is the horizontal distance from the wall back to the outermost portion of the operator, if it is motor operated, or near the end of the horizontal track if it is manual operated.
• Measure the side room, which is the distance from the edge of the opening (including any guide setback) to the outside of mechanisms on the drive or tension brackets and outside the motor if mounted in this area.

How tall does your overhead door need to be? Do you have a vehicle lift or other heavy equipment that may interfere with the garage door track?
